Currently I am a courtesy (=adjunct) faculty member in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. I and two colleagues just got a grant to study the relationships between snailfishes and crabs (Paralomis granulosa) in the Falkland Islands. The fish lay their eggs inside the gill cavities of the crabs, and we will study 1) the identity of the fish, 2) the life history of the fish, 3) the effects on the crabs, 4) the mechanism by which the fish lays its eggs in the crab, 5) the effects of the commercial crab fishery on the fish population. I am going to the Falklands in September to do the field work. I am also preparing (with four colleagues) an NSF proposal to study the fauna of the inshore basins of the Ross Sea. Finally, I am working on two more projects: one is a description of the growth and behavior of a snailfish off South Georgia (Southern Ocean) and its relationships to yet another crab species; the other is a review of New Zealand snailfishes, which I have been asked to do by the National Museum of New Zealand.
As far as other info is concerned, I am busier now than I was when I was working! I continue to work at home, and have a nice lab set up, but use the University library and the facilities in the OSU fish collection (x-ray, photographic equipment, etc) when I need it. I'm building another motorcycle and restoring one in addition (I have six now), and do the heavy lifting around the house (mow the lawn, prune trees). We have almost an acre of land, all landscaped, so there is always work to be done. Caroline telecommutes to her office in Virginia, so she is finished with work at around 1430 hours, leaving her the rest of the day to garden and go horseback riding. I also got involved in local politics and will probably run for City Council this fall.
