Directions to Narragansett Laboratory

  • From Route 95 (proceeding northward)
  • From Newport
  • From Providence
  • Take Exit 3 for Route 138, Newport
  • At end of exit ramp, turn right (east) on Route 138
  • Proceed east on Route 138 (aka Wyoming Road, Mooresfield  Road, Kingstown Road) for about 20 minutes.  You will pass a golf course, turf farms, the entrance to the University of Rhode Island in the village of Kingston, and finally arrive at the intersection of Routes 1 and 138 (see Mobil Station, restaurant on west side of Route 1, and a wooden tower on east side of Route 1)
  • Cross Route 1 (i.e. go through the light). Proceed down the hill on Bridgetown Road, over a small bridge crossing Narrow River, then up the hill to the traffic light and Route 1A (aka Boston Neck Road). See signs for EPA, NOAA, URI.
  • Go through the traffic light, (i.e. cross Rt. 1A), and continue on what is now called South Ferry Road.
  • After you pass a small white wooden church on the left, take the first left turn, Tarzwell Drive.  Then, bear left and go up the small hill to the NOAA, Narragansett Laboratory.
  • Park in the lot adjacent to the building.
  • Cross over Narragansett Bay via the Newport Bridge.  Follow Route 138 west over the Jamestown Bridge, then up the hill.  At the top of the hill, take the first (right) exit for Narragansett/Route 1A/Boston Neck Road.  The exit ramp curves around and intersects Route 1A.  Turn right/south on Route 1A (Boston Neck Road).
  • Continue south on Route 1A until the traffic light at the intersection of Route 1A, Bridgetown Road on the west side of Route 1A, and South Ferry Road on the east side of Route 1A (See signs for EPA, NOAA, and URI on east side of Route 1A).
  • Turn left on to South Ferry Road (heading east toward Narragansett Bay).  Pass a small white church on the left.  After the church, take next left onto Tarzwell Drive.  Then, bear left and go up the small hill to the NOAA Narragansett Laboratory.
  • Park in the lot adjacent to the building.
  • Take Route 95 south to Route 4 (left exit).
  • Take Route 4 south to Route 1.  (Route 4 ends and becomes Route 1)
  • Take Route 1 south past the exit for Newport and Route 138 east.  Go up a hill and continue on Route 1 south (at this point, Routes 1 and 138 are combined) until the intersection with traffic lights (Route 138 takes a right turn to the west here.  See restaurant and Mobil station on west or right side of highway, and see wooden tower on east or left side of highway.)
  • Turn left at this intersection on to Bridgetown Road.  Go down the hill, over a small bridge crossing Narrow River, then up the hill to the traffic light and intersection of Route 1A (Boston Neck Road) and Bridgetown Road (See signs for EPA, NOAA, and URI on east side of Route 1A).
  • Go through the light, crossing Route 1A (name of road becomes South Ferry Road) and continue on South Ferry Road passing a small white church on the left.  After the church, take next left onto Tarzwell Drive.  Then, bear left and go up the small hill to the NOAA, Narragansett Laboratory.
  • Park in the lot adjacent to the building.
